PRESENT PROGRESSIVE IN SPANISH (II)

By Nibaldo Calvo Buides

Sometimes when forming the present participle it is necessary to change the spelling of a word so that it agrees with the way it is pronounced. We call this an "orthographic" change. Here are some common examples:
 creer: creyendo
·       No estamos creyendo en sus palabras. (We are not believing in his words).

 huir: huyendo
·       Los osos están huyendo del bosque. (Bears are fleeing from the forest).

oír: oyendo
·       Estoy oyendo ruidos (I am listening noises).

  leer: leyendo
·       Estamos leyendo un buen libro (We are reading a good book).

 seguir: siguiendo
·       María está siguiendo al gato (Mary is following the cat).
